ABIM Internal Medicine Certification Examination

The ABIM Internal Medicine Certification Examination is an initial-certification assessment consisting of four timed sessions of single-best-answer multiple-choice questions. The January 2026 CERT blueprint assigns the largest share to Cardiovascular Disease at 14%, followed by five 9% categories: Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism; Gastroenterology; Infectious Disease; Pulmonary Disease; and Rheumatology and Orthopedics. The examination includes up to 240 questions, approximately 35 of which are new non-scored questions, and lasts about 10 hours including scheduled breaks. Passing the examination is necessary but not sufficient for certification; education, training, clinical competence, licensure, and procedural requirements also apply.
